Nova Scotia’s Newest Winery: Planters Ridge Winery & Vineyard
We’re thrilled to introduce Nova Scotia’s newest winery, Planters Ridge!
Located in Port Williams, NS this artisanal winery is housed in a 150-year old timber frame barn that combines historical features with some modern flourishes. The over six acres of vineyard is planted on the sandy-clay slopes of a ridge overlooking the pastoral Wellington Dyke.
The Planters Ridge name was selected to reflect the history of the land on which they are situated. The farm was part of an original land grant offered to the New England Planter families in 1760, by the Lieutenant Governor after the Acadian Expulsion. Owners, John McLarty and Lisa Law, purchased the property in 2010 from the seventh generation Woodworth family to have lived on the property.
At Planters Ridge, their intention is to preserve the rich farming history of the property through the cultivation of grapevines. The terroir serves as the inspiration for the wines they produce. They believe in the concept of vineyard enology, which at its core is the belief that wine is made in the vineyard. As a result, they have selected varietals with a natural affinity to this unique terroir that allow them to create uncompromising wines with a true sense of place.
“Planting a vineyard and setting up a winery from scratch is certainly not for the faint of heart”, states McLarty. “We have used a combination of our life experiences (from science, engineering, finance and agriculture) to redefine the extensive farming history of this extraordinary property and create a contemporary vineyard and winery operation. We are thrilled to introduce Planters Ridge as the next generation of agri-business in Nova Scotia.”
Planters Ridge will be celebrating its Grand Opening weekend June 27-29 2014. The celebration is open to the public all weekend with daily vineyard and cellar tours, select portfolio tastings paired with food and cheese, live music and more!
