Planters Ridge Winery

Planters Ridge Winery

Planters Ridge is an artisanal winery located in Port Williams, Nova Scotia. Housed in a renovated 155-year-old timber frame barn that combines historical features with modern flourishes, Planters Ridge has a comfortable, inviting, and educational atmosphere. The rich pastoral setting that embodies this unique microclimate serves as the inspiration for the wines they produce.

Owners John McLarty and Lisa Law believe in the concept of vineyard enology, which, at its core, proposes that wine is made in the vineyard. With this in mind, Planters Ridge strives to create the most exceptional and inspiring wines that this land will give. This passion is shared through education at their tasting room and guided tours of the vineyard.

Meet the Winemaker

Owner and Head Winemaker John McLarty grew up farming in South Western Ontario. Through regular travel, he developed an appreciation for fine wine. After retiring from a career in manufacturing management, he decided to follow through on his dream. He established Planters Ridge in 2010 with the help of his partner, Lisa, a Certified General Accountant. Their combined life experiences in chemical engineering, agriculture, manufacturing, and financial management, combined with mentorship from expert wine consultants, have helped John and Lisa achieve their goals. One such goal was Nova Scotia’s first producer of the Viognier grape, which they successfully accomplished in 2018.

Add @grandpre 's Riesling to your Nova Scotia Wine Add @grandpre 's Riesling to your Nova Scotia Wine Wish List🥂

There are few varieties that reflect the terroir better than Riesling. This medium-sweet white wine exhibits intense pear and citrus fruit aromas such as Bergamot Orange and Lime. Riesling's naturally high acidity and pronounced fruit flavours also lend this great wine potential to age gracefully.

Riesling is a versatile wine and can be paired with white fish or pork and a wide selection of different cheeses. Because of its pronounced sugar-acid balance, it can also stand up to spicy Asian dishes.

Bruce started his career at Peller Estates in British Columbia before settling in Nova Scotia.

L'Acadie Vineyards is certified organic, regenerative and vegan. Bruce's goal is to create wines with physiological ripeness every year – brown lignified seeds, acidity and ripe fruit flavours.

To help people enjoy their wines more, Bruce recommends getting to know the story behind the wines you are consuming, the soil people and practices!

Made in the 'Méthode Traditionnelle', NV Crémant is an aromatic blend of estate-grown Seyval Blanc, L'Acadie Blanc, and Chardonnay. Hand-harvested early in the season. Produced with a lower level of effervescence, this wine possesses a smoother, creamier bubble for a refreshing sparkling wine.

The location of the province's first vineyard was The location of the province's first vineyard was Bear River. The location had been chosen for its benign microclimate, which was both warmed and cooled by the twice-a-day flushing of the Bay of Fundy tides into and out of the Annapolis Basin and upstream to Bear River.
